I never thought I'd be where I am right now but I can't imagine a better place. Even though I'm more busy than ever (except for those few years in college) I couldn't be happier. It's funny how things work out sometimes. Having 2 kids exactly 1 year apart is a little crazy and definitely takes away from my creative time but it's still a blessing and I can manage to find time to do my own thing now and then.
During the month of October I managed to illustrate a children's book that my father wrote 16 years ago and never really did anything with. I surprised him with the finished product and it made him cry, I was very pleased with his reaction. I'm my own worst critic so I wasn't sure if I really liked what I did. I never thought I'd say this but, after seeing his reaction I realized I have to lighten up on how hard I am on myself, not everything has to be perfect. Easier said than done though.
The hardest part about being so busy is I'm still trying to find my own personal style when it comes to artwork, I jump around so much that I never really get a chance to sit down and think about it. I'd really like to develop my own kind of signature style. When I look at art work on devART I can recognize some of the artists because they have a very distinct quality or characteristic to their work, a part of them is in their pieces and you can see it. I think that's what makes them so good. When I hop around I never really get good at any one thing so it's all mediocre crap, nothing polished, nothing that really jumps out and says 'hey, that's who I am, this is me you're looking at'. I think all my stuff is very rushed because I'm always interrupted, but that's life I guess. Maybe that's my style? Rushed, mediocre, sloppy crap? Guess I better keep my day job.
